Firewalking and a dragons den, budding entrepreneurs have opportunity in day-long Celebration of Entrepreneurship

Budding entrepreneurs will have the opportunity to face some genuine ‘dragons’ with their business ideas in the latest day-long Celebration of Entrepreneurship on Wednesday March 16th at the University of Strathclyde.

Entrepreneur and philanthropist Tom Hunter; Linn Products founder and MD Ivor Tiefenbrun; expert ‘angel’ Nelson Grey and Bob Edmonds, co-founder of the Eurec Group Ltd are just some of the dragons on the panel at CoE Day.

Students will have two minutes to pitch their business ideas to the panel, and are allowed a maximum three minutes for Q&A. Succinct communication is the key since in that time they will have to present a summary of the business idea, reasons why the time is right for it, target markets, competitive advantages and financial projections.

Rather than being torn to shreds, as on the reality TV show on which this event is based, would-be Donald Trumps will get cash prizes for the best presentations and invaluable feedback and advice from business people with a proven success record.

And if the Dragon’s Den isn’t scary enough, participants can always try firewalking instead!

Firewalking has become one of the most popular and effective motivational tools used in the corporate world, and students will have a chance to see why at this innovative session, run jointly by certified firewalking trainer Bryce Redford and personal development coach and Hunter Centre lecturer Sandy Newbigging.

Encouraging the spirit of enterprise and entrepreneurial skills is at the heart of CoE Day, a unique event jointly organised by the Hunter Centre for Entrepreneurship @ Strathclyde, the Department of Design, Manufacture & Engineering Management (DMEM and the University’s Careers Service.

This is the fourth annual CoE Day, drawing in current Strathclyde students, alumni of the University, entrepreneurs and inspirational speakers from a variety of disciplines. School pupils will have their own programme in the morning while the main events start at 12.30 in the James Weir Building.

Dr Jonathan Levie, Director of the Hunter Centre for Entrepreneurship at Strathclyde, said: “Students will mix with entrepreneurs from many backgrounds and through their example realise that their own potential is far greater than they ever thought possible.”

Further details from :

In the mid 1990’s I felt there was something missing in many coaching training programs that slowed the development of the core competencies in the field. There has often been a lot of focus on what skills and competencies a great coach should be able to demonstrate however much less about specifically how to develop them and how to consistently demonstrate progress and continuous professional development. Also many challenges a coaching client might bring to a session such as limiting beliefs, unresolved negative emotions or ineffective ways of doing things were frequently beyond the methods and tools that coaches are trained in.

When I came across NLP in the late 1990’s I saw it’s potential to fill the gap and therefore accelerate the development of skills and competency, improve consistency, quality and standards and also, for me, to do so in a fun way. It took me back to a book I had read called “The Inner Game of Tennis” by Timothy Gallwey which I believe really kicked off the development of coaching. What caught my attention the most was the mind set which is about the study and replication of excellence and the structure of subjective experience that is, how we each perceive the world in our own unique way.

Going forward I believe the future of NLP and Coaching is NLP Coaching as it brings together two powerful disciplines that enables people to create new results for themselves and to enable their clients to do the same. It also provides a solid foundation that will continually develop over your life.

Most experts agree that early detection is critical for the successful treatment of cervical cancer. As a result of Jade Goody keeping cancer in the public eye over the last few months more woman are going for screening. What is missing from a lot of the press coverage, and something that was raised with Jade’s publicists Max Clifford Associates, is that there is a lot that can be done to reduce the risk in the first place and to enable any pre-cancerous cells to clear normally.

It is suggested that the virus HPV is the major contributor factor in cervical cases however this is only part of the story as Dr Carolyn Fang says:

“HPV infection alone is not sufficient to cause cervical cancer, most HPV infections in healthy women will disappear spontaneously over time. Only a small percentage will progress to become precancerous cervical lesions or cancer. An effective immune response against HPV can lead to viral clearance and resolution of HPV infection. But some women are less able to mount an effective immune response to HPV.”

One of the key factors that has an impact on our immune system is our emotional state which is based on how we perceive and respond to the world around us. This is often influenced by our experiences in the past and the emotional baggage we have built up through our lives. A spokesman for Cancer Research UK said that more research would be needed to prove the link however there is now a significant body of research and field evidence to support it.

Dr David Hamilton says that “Stress depresses the immune system and affects how medicines work for us, so if we can reduce stress in our lives, we can enjoy healthier lives and recover faster from illness and disease”

So if you are feeling stressed on a regular basis or feel you have a lot of emotional baggage from the past then the good news is that with recent developments, supported by research in the fields of Psychobiology and Neuroimmunology, there are now ways you can dump the emotional baggage and get on with your life quickly and easily.

Forward thinking health care professionals are now looking at how to bring this new research into their practices and how to communicate this to people who are used to change taking time through many of the traditional approaches.

I find it interesting how the news is reported and particularly how the same information is interpreted and altered by the meaning it is given by the writer – including me!

The latest news is that scientists have discovered a ‘fat controller’ in the human body that they believe could hold the key to tackling Britain’s growing obesity problem – see some of the headlines at the bottom of this article. The research underpinning the news headlines comes from a laboratory study involving genetic manipulation of mice which investigated the role of an enzyme (acyl CoA:monoacylglycerol acyltransferase-2 or MGAT2) and its role in how fat is used and stored – this enzyme is one of three main MGAT enzymes found in the intestines of both mice and humans.

`Here we show that the intestinal lipid synthesis enzyme acyl CoA:monoacylglycerol acyltransferase-2 (MGAT2) has a crucial role in the assimilation of dietary fat and the accretion of body fat in mice. Mice lacking MGAT2 have a normal phenotype on a low-fat diet. Our studies identify MGAT2 as a key determinant of energy metabolism in response to dietary fat and suggest that the inhibition of this enzyme may prove to be a useful strategy for treating obesity and other metabolic diseases associated with excessive fat intake.’ - Dr Robert Farese

I believe there are major limitations in the thinking that we can just take a pill and the problem will go away. In doing so the attempt is to tackle the symptom rather than the underlying causal factors. Inhibiting an enzyme in the body may on the surface appear a plausable line of enquiry however there could be many unintended consequences of going down that path and any pill will be a long way off.

The good news is there are simple things you can do right now to be slim, fit and healthy:

Keep hydrated; drink at least 1.5 litres of water per day

Take regular exercise

Eat food as close to its natural state as possible

Take time to relax and eat

Cut out or reduce sugar and artificial sweeteners in your diet

Find out if you are intolerant to any foods

Make sure you are getting enough essential fatty acids in your diet

Understand how your body deals with toxins and detoxifies and how to support it

We give ourselves lots of reasons why we put on weight and for most of us when we are really honest with ourselves we know what to do to be slim, fit and healthy. So focus on what you want and take action and adjust based on feedback of what works for you.

I put on the TV tonight just in time to catch The One Show on BBC1 and they were doing a feature on viewer Mike Hughes who wrote to them back in April with a Dental Phobia. When he was as a boy he had the traumatic experience of having several teeth out without anaesthetic. As a result he has had a severe phobia of dentists ever since and had not been for over 27 years.

Mile was introduced to Dr Tim Newton by the One Show team who was described as an expert in dental psychology. Tim then worked with Mike over 5 months using a process called gradual exposure to get him to the point where he received his first filling and was described as on his way to overcoming his phobia.

The feature highlighted a common problem for many people in the UK and around the world and the process Dr Tim Newton took him through was clearly effective. What surprised me was that the method chosen to help Mike, which was described as new, took 5 months to complete. I believe this is a long time as there are a number of methods that have been around for many years which have been demonstrated as effective in enabling someone to clear their phobia which work in less than an hour.

Example include the NLP Fast Phobia Cure, Time Line Therapy® and EFT so if you have a phobia that gets in the way of you living life to the full and that you would like to clear check out these options as well!

So it’s that time of year again, the nights are drawing in fast towards the shortest day when it would appear the sun struggles to show itself. As the song goes, ‘Tis the season to be jolly’ but for many people this time of year is anything but jolly as they experience a mood change known as Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) which is also known as winter depression. The change of season can have an impact on our body and mind and therefore our mood and for some this can be considerable including extreme feelings of lethargy, fatigue and depression.

If you have experienced or are experiencing the symptoms of SAD then it is possible that the change in season creates a tipping point for you. The good news is that due to the way the mind and body interact there a number of things that you can do to re-address this balance reducing and alleviating these symptoms.

Spend time outdoors near nature, go for a walk and increase your exercise when it’s light and maximise the amount of full spectrum light you are exposed to each day. Consider replacing some of the light bulbs at home or work with natural daylight bulbs and make a point of getting some fresh air at lunchtimes.

Diet can play an important part so trial for a few weeks reducing your intake of processed foods as well as wheat, dairy and alcohol and increase foods that are as close to their natural state as possible including vegetables, nuts and whole grains and make sure you are drinking at least 2 litres of water per day and see how much better you feel.

The winter months for many are less active and quieter so any unresolved emotional issues from the past can come to mind. This is a normal and natural process to enable us to let go of emotional baggage. Where we put our attention affects how we feel so it can be uncomfortable if we dwell upon the past. Therefore it’s a great time to clear that old stuff once and for all which will have a positive effect on your overall mood. In the past this it was believed that this was generally a painful and lengthy process however with the leading edge techniques available now you can clear emotional issues from the past comfortably in about one to two hours.

Another effective way of lifting how you feel is each day creating a list of fifty things you are grateful for in your life and spending some time focusing on those things. This fun and simple exercise gets easier the more you do it and within a few weeks life will feel very different.

So if you get a bit down over the winter months commit to yourself to do these things for three weeks and you might surprise yourself and find “tis the season to be jolly!”

When I was growing up and someone said an illness was all in the mind it was seen as negative, that you were faking it and therefore it wasn’t real. Times have changed and now the leading edge research in science and health is discovering that in fact the body and mind are inextricably linked and cannot be separated. That when we think we produce chemicals that are released into our blood stream and our body responds.

Each of us has over 50 trillion cells in our body all working together in harmony. Every one of these cells is paying attention and responding to the environment they are in. Scientists say we have a built-in pharmacy within us that can produce and deliver targeted chemicals exactly where they are required in the body. As Deepak Chopra MD says – to think therefore is to do brain chemistry.

Forward thinking health care professionals are now looking at how to bring this new research into their practices. There is a growing realisation that optimum health and well being is more than just taking a pill or doing surgery and that taking an integrated approach that encompassed the mental, emotional and physical aspects of an individual is much more powerful.

“It’s The Thought that Counts – the astounding evidence for the power of mind over matter ” by Dr David Hamilton and published by Hay House is an inspiring book about the science behind how our body and mind is intertwined, how every though, feeling and intention we have sends ripples throughout our bodies. David has taken complex scientific concepts and skillfully woven them together in a way that anyone can grasp quickly.

When pharmaceutical scientist Dr David Hamilton observed the results of tests on new drugs he noticed that patients receiving the control placebo pills reported the same level of improvement as people receiving the actual drug. Seeing this result repeat itself time and time again he became facinated by the mind-body connection and started to research the work of scientists, mystics and healers working in this field. The result is this ground-breaking book, in which Dr Hamilton explains how the mind and emotions can influence the wellbeing of our body and even the structure of our DNA.

If you want leading edge thinking and scientific research delivered in a simple way then I would recomend picking up a copy of this book or go see him talk.
